5 ways to wear your favourite summer maxi dress
Yes, you can wear that one summer item you love again and again—with a few of our styling tips.
Chances are you have that one item in your wardrobe you reach for again and again when getting dressed for summer. It likely is easy to wear and has a throw-on-and-go vibe. And it's probably extremely versatile. For us, that piece is the maxi dress. It requires almost no thought, and always looks pulled together—even when we're sweltering in the summer heat. You likely already have a maxi dress in your wardrobe, or maybe you picked one up and aren't quite sure how to style it. Here's how we're wearing the maxi dress for everything on our calendar for summer.
The dress
While you can't go wrong with a simple black maxi dress, we recommend picking one up in a print. This one, with it's darker background is less intimidating than a loud print, and has the added bonus of transitioning seamlessly into your fall wardrobe.

Brunch
Embrace your inner 90's child and wear your summer maxi dress over a thin white t-shirt. Your day-off brunch should be all about ease and fun, so we'd wear simple sneakers and festive sunnies—just in case you end up on a patio sipping mimosas.
T-shirt, $7, hm.com. Superga sneakers, $90, nordstrom.com. Backpack, $82, asos.com. Sunglasses, $140, clearly.ca.
Date night
Whether your date night is casual or classy, a maxi dress will do the trick. Our recommendation? Bring a jacket that hits at the waist (or cinches at the waist) just in case it gets chilly in the evening, and pick shoes that are comfortable. Have fun with your accessories! A great bag in a bold hue and simple but sparkly jewellery elevate this outfit.
Jacket, $98, gapcanada.ca. Purse, $50, gapcanada.ca. Bauble Bar necklace, $58, nordstrom.com. Jeffrey Campbell sandals, $166, nordstrom.com.
Work
Dressing for an office in the summer can be complicated. It's hot outside, but chances are the AC is cranked up indoors. The solution? Layering. Wear a crisp white button-down under your strappy maxi dress. Then, add a slim-fitting long blazer to complete the look. When buttoned up, this minidress-length jacket turns your dress into a skirt—talk about versatility! Simple (and practical) wedges and a carry-everything tote pull the whole ensemble together.
Blazer, $90, zara.com. Nine West wedges, $111, nordstrom.com. White shirt, $18, hm.com. Sole Society tote, $90, nordstrom.com.
Wedding guest
Yes, you can wear a summer maxi dress to a wedding! With this look it's all about adding posh and luxe-looking accessories. Your best bet? Metallics! A pair of simple, sparkly heels and a metallic clutch elevate this dress. Plus, statement earrings that play with similar tones and a gold cuff complete a wedding-worthy look. The takeaway here? When in doubt, add sparkle. At least when it comes to weddings.
Earrings, $74, bananarepublic.ca. Heels, $60, callitspring.ca. BP cuff, $22, nordstrom.com. Clutch, $36, zara.com.
Weekender
Whatever your weekend plans are, we know you want to be casual and comfortable. Which is why we paired the maxi dress with simple ballet flats that can take you anywhere. We added a tote for carrying farmer's market purchases or snacks and decided on a hat, just in case you'll be wandering around in the sun. Plus, it's always good to bring a sweater—just in case—so we picked a maxi cardigan to keep things flowy and summery. It's the picture of ease—with a stylish perspective of course.
Sweater, $225, aritzia.com. Hat, $62, bananarepublic.ca. Bag, $29, joefresh.com. Flats, $213, jcrew.com.
