This is why you should add cocoa to your coffee
Adding cocoa powder to your cup of joe can improve your heart health.
If, like us, you can't start your day without a hot (or cold!) cup of coffee, then you'll be glad to know that science approves of your daily ritual.
In fact, according to John Hopkins Medicine, drinking one or two cups of coffee a day has been found to lower your risk of heart disease or heart failure.
Did you know you can make your favourite drink even more beneficial by adding one special ingredient?

Coffee and cocoa beans actually boast similar health perks, according to Dr. Nikki Bart, a heart failure and heart transplant cardiologist at the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute in Darlinghurst, Australia, so adding one to the other actually multiplies their benefits. Both ingredients contain flavonols, chemical compounds found in plants. Flavonols are part of the antioxidant family called flavonoids.
Flavonols reduce inflammation and improve blood flow, improving heart health by relaxing your blood vessels and lowering your blood pressure.
Here are a few tips on how to make the healthiest cup of coffee:
- A little goes a long way. There is no need to go overboard with your cocoa powder. Cardiologists recommend using raw and unsweetened powder for maximum benefits.
- Skip the sugar and milk.
- Look for organic options.
