These Superfood Seeds Are Even Better For Us Than We Thought, Study Finds

Superfoods get a lot of hype, but these touted seeds really do live up to the name.

Chia seeds are known for being full of fibre, rich in antioxidants, and anti-inflammatory, but new research reveals they may do even more.

What are the benefits of chia seeds?

Chia seeds are high in fibre (they have 11 grams per two tablespoons) and can absorb up to 10 times their weight in water, taking on a gel-like consistency. Research suggests this effect also takes place in the stomach, helping absorb toxins and promoting fullness.

These seeds are rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain function and cardiovascular health. They’re also loaded with antioxidants, which help prevent age-related illnesses and protect the seeds from going rancid, and are a source of calcium, magnesium, iron, and folic acid.

If that wasn't enough, a new study found that chia seeds can also lower cholesterol and blood pressure. The results show that adding this superfood to your diet may mitigate risks of cardiovascular disease.

How to eat chia seeds

The easiest way to start incorporating chia seeds into your diet on a regular basis is by adding them to a meal. We're impartial to the chocolatey-goodness of our Chia Seed Brownies, but also enjoy Blueberry Chia Pudding, Pumpkin Seed Overnight Oats, and Chia & Fresh Berry Jam.

Another popular way to consume this superfood is in a drink mix. Add 1 tbsp of chia seeds to a glass of water and let sit for 10-15 minutes until the seeds have a gel-like consistency. This beverage can help with hydration, digestion, and constipation. We love adding some electrolytes for an added boost of health benefits!

The next time you're feeling like you could use a boost, try adding chia seeds to your plate and see how you feel.
