This Test Is The Best Way To Find Out Biological Age

Do you feel your age? New research is pinpointing exactly how to calculate how old your body really is—AKA your biological age.

With longevity becoming a new catchphrase of the wellness world, it’s no surprise that scientists are digging deeper into determining our true cellular ages.

In contrast to your chronological age—how many years you’ve been alive—your biological age tells the story of how your body is aging and how old your cells are.

A new study published in the journal Aging Cell revealed the best way to calculate this. Unfortunately, the results showed that at-home saliva tests you may have seen for purchase online may not be the most accurate.

The study focused on epigenetic clocks, biochemical tests that measure your biological age based on gene expression. These measurements are done through tissue-based tests, typically blood, though the study also looked into four other less invasive tests, including saliva.

6 Anti-Aging Vitamins That *Actually* Work

Can you actually find your biological age?

Researchers tested 284 tissue samples from 83 individuals aged nine to 70. They found significant differences in epigenetic clock estimates from oral-based (i.e. saliva) to blood-based tissues, with average differences as high as 30 years.

In other words, they found the blood-based tests to be the most accurate in confirming a biological age.

Though there is still more research to be done, the study highlights “the need for careful consideration of tissue type when estimating epigenetic age,” say the researchers.

You can order direct-to-consumer blood-based tests online, but researchers say you shouldn't put too much stock in the results. No one test is going to be able to determine your lifespan.

How to slow the aging process

While we may be a ways off in inventing an entirely accurate at-home epigenetic clock test, there are plenty of things you can do to take care of your body in the meantime. Eating nutritious foods, regular exercise, getting enough sleep, and monitoring your stress levels can help delay aging.
