How To Clean Your Hairbrush
Every week you wash your hair, change your towels, and swap out your sheets—but when was the last time you washed your hairbrush?
Your hairbrush smooths your strands, evenly distributes oils, and gives a little scalp massage. After running it through your hair day after day, it collects dirt, oil, and haircare products you haven't washed out. In other words, it isn't helping your hair.
When to clean your hairbrush
Dry shampoo, mousse, leave-in conditioners, and hairspray can build up on your scalp, so it's no surprise they can also build up on your brush. By using your brush without properly cleaning it, you'll deposit the old products, plus additional dirt and grime, back onto your hair.
How often you clean your brush depends on how often and when you use it. If you regularly use styling products, you'll need to clean your brush more often than someone who doesn't. We recommend once a week for lots of products and once every two to three weeks if you use less.
How to wash your hairbrush
- Remove all of the hair from the brush. Sliding a comb through the bristles or using the pick of the end of the comb will help.
- Fill up a bowl (or your sink) with warm water. Add a few drops of shampoo and swish it to form suds.
- Submerge your brush in the water for 3 to 5 minutes. A plastic brush can be completely submerged while you'll want to avoid getting any wooden pieces or soft padding wet. In this case, just submerge the bristles.
- Move your brush around in the water to loosen any debris. Go in and scrub with a toothbrush for an extra deep clean.
- Rinse your hairbrush with cool, clean water and leave it, bristles down, until dry.
