Christine Cushing: A Trailblazer in the Culinary World

There are few chefs in the world who have accomplished what Chef Christine Cushing has. A true trailblazer, Christine became a household name as the host of Christine Cushing Live on Food Network Canada—a groundbreaking nightly live show that showcased her unparalleled ability to cook her own recipes, field live phone calls, interview celebrity guests, and entertain audiences, all in real-time. Yes, really live—not pre-recorded! Over its four-season run, Christine Cushing Live brought viewers closer to the action in the kitchen and into the world of cooking with a warmth and authenticity that few could replicate.

Christine’s guest list read like a who’s who of culinary greatness: Jamie Oliver, Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, and many more joined her on the show, sharing their stories, culinary philosophies, and passion for food. Her charisma and down-to-earth style made her the perfect host, blending the art of cooking with the art of conversation in a way that resonated with audiences across Canada.

International Recognition and Culinary Storytelling

Christine’s influence extends far beyond Canada’s borders. Her internationally acclaimed food documentary series, Confucius Was a Foodie, aired in over 90 countries and on PBS across the United States. The series explored the profound impact of Chinese cuisine on global food culture, weaving together culinary exploration, history, and storytelling. It was a masterclass in culinary anthropology and a celebration of food as a universal language. The show’s success solidified Christine’s reputation as a global culinary ambassador and deepened her connection with audiences worldwide.

More Than a TV Personality

While Christine’s presence on television is legendary, her impact doesn’t stop there. She has authored three best-selling cookbooks: Dish It Out, Fearless in the Kitchen, and Pure Food—the latter earning a Gourmand World Cookbook Award. Her popular YouTube channel continues to inspire home cooks with approachable, flavourful recipes and culinary tips.

Christine’s contributions to the culinary community have also been recognized with prestigious accolades. She is a Canadian Screen Award nominee and a US Taste Award winner, where she tied with Gordon Ramsay for Best Host of a TV Series in 2020.

Advocate for Community and Culinary Education

Christine’s passion for food is matched by her commitment to giving back. She has been a proud spokesperson for Cook for the Cure, raising funds for breast cancer research, and an advocate for The Children’s Breakfast Clubs of Canada, ensuring children start their day with a nutritious meal. She has also supported the Starbright Foundation for Sick Kids Hospital and served as a judge for the Gold Medal Plates fundraiser for the Olympic Committee.

A Lifetime of Culinary Excellence

Born in Athens, Greece, Christine immigrated to Canada with her family as a child, bringing with her a deep appreciation for Mediterranean flavours and traditions. She began her culinary training at George Brown College before graduating at the top of her class at the prestigious École de Cuisine La Varenne in Paris. Christine honed her skills in renowned kitchens, including Toronto’s Four Seasons Hotel and Scaramouche Restaurant, before bringing her talents to the screen.
