5 Common Mistakes That Are Damaging Your Hair
Taking care of your hair doesn't just mean using the right products. Through seemingly harmless daily practices, you could be inadvertently damaging your strands.
Keep your hair healthy by avoiding these common haircare mistakes.
1. Sleeping with wet hair
Taking a shower before bed may seem relaxing, but falling asleep with wet hair is far from ideal. Water weakens your hair's cuticles—the outer layer of hair strands—leading to split ends and breakage. Plus, friction with your pillowcase can create frizz and tangles. To avoid this, dry your hair until it's at least slightly damp and opt for a low braid to reduce friction.
2. Brushing wet hair
Though brushing your hair immediately after showering might be second nature, wet hair is especially fragile and prone to breakage. Instead, gently squeeze out excess water with a microfibre towel. Then, use a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair once it's almost dry.
3. Not cleaning your hairbrush
Your brush accumulates dead cells, product residue, and sebum with each use. If it is not cleaned regularly, all these impurities are redistributed in your hair. To avoid this, clean your brush once a week with lukewarm water and a mild shampoo.
4. Not using sun protectant in your hair
Just like your skin, your hair needs protection from UV rays. Prolonged exposure to the sun can alter hair colour, bringing out unwanted yellowish tones, and damage the hair structure, accelerating hair loss. To prevent these effects, wear a hat or use hair care products that offer UV protection.
5. Wearing a tight ponytail or slicked back bun
A sleek style may look modern, but it can put excess stress on the scalp. In the long run, this can cause localized hair loss. Opt for softer styles, such as a loose braid or low bun, to preserve your strands.
