Why you should always travel with this one fashion item
I never pack my bag—for any vacation—without this one piece
On the fourth day of a two-week work trip to Hong Kong and Thailand, I left my hotel room and made my way downstairs to the breakfast buffet to meet my colleagues, the six other women I was travelling with. It was a busy day. One that would start with a ferry ride, include a lot of walking and eating but also one where it was important to feel polished while also being comfortable. Without thinking too hard, I grabbed my trusty dark denim skinny jeans and an oversized striped shirt. It was easy, it was comfortable and with a swipe of lipstick and the right jewellery I would be comfortable wearing it somewhere a bit more fancy if I needed to. As I entered the restaurant, two of my colleagues were already there. And they were wearing the exact same thing I was: a striped shirt with jeans.
We laughed, made some silly comments about being triplets and started on our breakfasts. But one by one, the rest of my colleagues showed up. And all of us—completely of our own accord and without discussing it with each other—showed up wearing jeans and a striped shirt. A white shirt with either blue or black stripes. Some were crew necks, some were boatnecks. They were of different weights (mine was really more of a light sweater) and fits. But they were all striped shirts, and we all wore them on this busy travel day.
The lesson here is simple. Whenever you travel, bring a striped shirt with you. Preferably one that's white and navy (or black). Preferably one that is body-skimming. Preferably one you could wear anywhere. Throughout the next week my colleagues and I recycled our shirts wearing them with midi skirts, culottes, denim cut-offs and with our trusty denim. Though we didn't all match again that trip, chances are if we were all together, one of us was in a striped shirt.
It's stylish. It's easy. It goes with everything and it can be worn anywhere (when styled appropriately). It's your fashion ringer and you shouldn't be without it.
