This season’s biggest accessory? Earrings—literally!

The latest trend in earrings is all about eye-catching, shoulder grazing colour. But even if you identify as a fashion minimalist, there’s an earrings trend you can try this season.

It’s probably been a while since you relied on your lobes to tie your outfit together, but with this season’s introduction of bold earrings, it’s not so farfetched. From delicate studs to long, dangly drops to bold oversized hoops, the options to accessorize your ears are endless. And while we recommend going big with it comes to your jewellery this season, even minimalists and stud-lovers will find something to get excited about. For an inside scoop, we spoke to Canadian jewellery designer, Lissa Bowie, about the latest trends in earrings.

Big, bold and round

The return of oversized hoops (a la J. Lo-era Jennifer Lopez) should be your entry point to this season’s earring trend. “Hoops made a grand appearance this season,” says Bowie, “each with their own textures, sizes, and shapes.” From smaller thicker hoops to thinner shoulder-reaching circles, the best part about this trend is that when it comes to size, anything goes. To keep this look modern, keep your makeup and the rest of your outfit simple.

Join the cult of colour

The idea of wearing bright colours in the summer seems obvious but isn’t necessarily when it comes to jewellery. It’s easy to stick to metal tones—gold, silver, or even the more trendy rose gold—and forget that there is an entire rainbow of other colours to choose from. According to Bowie, turquoise is a perfect summer shade because it’s reminiscent of all the things we love in summer: “blue skies and water—it’s a stone that embodies warm sunny days forever.” Moving into fall, take that bold sentiment and find yourself some jewel-tone accessories. We love a rich garnet, a deep emerald, or a saturated blue to liven up the grey, black and denim wardrobe we turn to in the fall.

Ship shape

Choosing earrings with an unusual texture, shape or material is a simple and fun way to add interest to your look. Bowie recommends looking for pieces that are full of movement and subtle detail. Think multiple strands, twisted metals, varying finishes and different elements. Drop earrings are a perfect way to play with length, shape, and texture, and find something that no one else has.

Less is (still) more

If larger earrings sound intimidating or seem contrary to your minimalist esthetic, a pair of stud earrings are an absolute must-have. You can stick with the tried-and-true studs you love—but try a modern update. Even the smallest of earrings, with their beautiful and intricate designs, can be interesting. The rules apply when choosing a smaller set of earrings—consider the colour, shape, and texture. Picking playful studs with an interesting shape (arrows, stars), texture (stippling, striping) or colour (saturated jewel tones, pretty pastels) can make your stud game strong.
