Fall jackets to wear before busting out your winter parka
When the temperature drops—but not too much—you'll need a transitional jacket to take you from the end of summer through fall.
It’s too cold to just go out to meet your day jacket-less, but it’s still too hot to pull out any heavier winter jackets. It’s the season of transitional dressing and transitional outerwear—which isn’t so bad if you ask us. Despite the unpredictable weather, there are plenty of lighter jackets that make for great layering pieces. Here are a few of our favourite styles.
DENIM
We’re not shy about our love of denim jackets. It’s a classic wardrobe staple and works well year round (when you layer), but especially come fall. Most denim jackets are sturdy enough to keep their shape but comfortable enough that you don’t feel incredibly restricted. You can wear them as a topper for when you venture outside, or you can just make it part of your outfit. And they come in so many shapes and styles you really can’t go wrong picking up a new trendy option. Our picks this season? Levis classic trucker jacket is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year—its longevity speaks for itself. We love the idea of a longer denim jacket that makes a statement but wears just as easily as a cropped version. And this season you can’t go wrong with a little added embellishment.

ARMY
Army print and army-inspired toppers have been gaining in popularity for a couple years—and we love the utilitarian vibe that these jackets offer. If you’re not sure about going full camo, pick up a parka in army green and keep the embellishment to a minimum. For a full embracing of the utility trend, pick up a waterproof option or something with a lot of oversized pockets. Feeling like these are too masculine? Grab a jacket with embroidery!

BLAZER
Menswear was a major runway trend for fall 2017, so it’s no surprise that these toppers are making their way into our wardrobes. For something that is a little warmer, find a structured blazer made of wool or boucle. For something lighter, look for linen or synthetics. Don’t be afraid of out-of-the-box colours and masculine prints like pinstripes or plaid. And if you’ve got love for the 1980s don’t be afraid of going with something oversized or with emphasis on the shoulders—just keep the rest of your outfit streamlined.

SWEATER
Perhaps the coziest way to bundle up for fall is by wearing a great knit sweater as outerwear. These pieces can be casual or dressy and they’ll take you to the office, to brunch, to pumpkin picking, no problem. We love belted options that temper the oversized nature of these picks, or ones that are heavier versions than some of our wardrobe favourites, like this cardigan coat. For the ultimate in comfort, find a zip-up hoodie that’s lined with fleece or faux fur.
Missguided hooded jacket, $102, asos.com. Fringe sweater jacket, $129, zara.com. Cardi-coat, $70, oldnavy.ca.
STATEMENT
There are few better ways to make a style statement then picking up a great eye-catching jacket. These toppers can be worn every day by pairing with simple separates like jeans and a t-shirt, but really shine when you can pair them with occasion-worthy pieces too like a stunning dress and heels. This season, you can make a statement in different ways like print and colour (you can’t go wrong with a moody floral), texture (faux fur and fuzzy details are trending) or interesting shapes (wear this cinched poncho over a long-sleeve tee or even a denim jacket for a modern take).
Tie-waist poncho, $110, bananarepublica.ca. Flower coat, $120, mango.com. Faux fur leopard print coat, $178, gapcanada.ca.
