Fall fashion: 5 scarves you need this season

Now that fall is here (with winter a few close paces behind) it's time to start thinking about expanding our cold-weather wardrobe with warmer accessories. As the temperature drops, there is no better way to beat the chill and look stylish than with the addition of the right scarf. There are myriad scarf styles lining store shelves -- from cashmere wraps to circle scarves to faux fur -- and we have the scoop on five of our no-fail favourites.

We asked Adrienne Shoom, fashion expert and style director at Joe Fresh, to share her tips on what scarves to embrace this fall, how to wear them and what to pair them with. She provided us with a cross-section of cosy styles that not only add warmth, but make the season a little more fashionable.

1. The cable-knit scarf
Nothing says cosy and snug like a chunky cable knit, especially when it comes to scarves. This '70s-inspired accessory is a great way to stay warm and in style this season. "A chunky cable-knit scarf is the perfect accessory for that '70s look that's really popular right now," says Shoom. She recommends pairing this sumptuous scarf with a faux shearling jacket and wide-leg or flared jeans to give your outfit even more of a retro vibe.

2. The striped scarf
For anyone who has been shying away from stripes so far, now is your chance to embrace this bold, eye-catching trend without feeling like you're going over the top. A striped scarf is a simple but effective way to add interest to a neutral coat and to have fun with your cold-weather accessories.

"This season, mix up your prints and patterns," says Shoom. "Wear stripes on stripes!" With these anything-goes rules, the striped scarf provides endless opportunities to spice up your winter wardrobe and add an element of playfulness to any outfit.

3. The faux-fur scarf
Whether you like it or not, fur continues to be a big trend this season. Wearing a faux-fur collar or scarf is not only an ideal way to stay warm in the harsh wind, but this must-have accessory also provides an opportunity to get in on the furry trend without feeling guilty about endangering a species for the sake of fashion.

Not to mention, faux fur has a refined, feminine elegance that can easily take your look up a notch. "Add a faux-fur collar or scarf to any outfit to instantly create a chic, ladylike look," says Shoom.

4. The Nordic scarf

Somehow just looking at a Nordic scarf makes you feel warm and cosy on a cold day -- think crackling fires and log cabins. The winter-inspired print, reminiscent of falling snowflakes or delicate ice crystals, offers a fashionable way to pay homage to winter.

Shoom suggests bundling up and pairing the scarf with a ski jacket for that perfect snow-bunny look, or, depending on the thickness of the piece, using it to complete a streamlined ensemble. "Try layering a Nordic scarf overtop a turtleneck with a slim pant," she suggests.

5. The bright scarf
Bold, eye-catching colours were a staple on the fall runways and the hot-hue trend isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Shoom agrees: "Colour is ‘haute' right now." A bright scarf is fun to wear and can be the perfect accompaniment for everything from a little black dress to your favourite pair of jeans and a white T-shirt. According to Shoom, it doesn't even matter if you're already wearing a pop of colour. "Mix, but just don't match, when it comes to your colours," she says.

Whether it's chunky and warm, faux and furry, reminiscent of the season or brightly coloured, there are a number of stylish scarves to choose from to keep you cosy this season. All it takes is knowing which warm fabric wrapped around your neck will keep you looking on-trend and cold weather-ready.
