4 ways to wear your favourite summer clothes into fall
Let's face it – fashion is fickle. The wide-leg trousers you adored last year have been replaced by their super svelte cousin, the skinny pant. And it's just a matter of time before your beloved circle skirt looks passé when compared to the newly revived pencil version. But does that mean you should shelve summer's key pieces at the first sign of fall? Far from it, says Judy Inc. fashion stylist Rita Fiorucci. She says you can don your favourite lightweight summer dress, tank top or flowing skirt from season to season. It's just a matter of knowing how to wear them.
"I think a lot of people get caught up with the idea that certain pieces are strictly for summer or fall," she says. "In reality, it's really easy to make a great pair of pants or shoes or whatever work throughout the year -- it comes down to what you wear it with." Here are her top four season-neutral picks and how to wear them year round.
Summer trend: Peep-toe heels, wedges and sandals with heels
They're an easy way to dress up casual attire and add sophistication to any look, says Fiorucci.
How to wear it for fall: Since bare legs and brisk winds don't mix, pair any of the above with wool-based texturized stockings, suggests Fiorucci. "Last year, stockings were more opaque and uniform in colour. This season, the more visual interest they have, the better."
Summer trend: The tank top
Always a fashion favourite, the tank works because it's a no-brainer. Worn alone or layered, with Bermuda shorts or a billowy skirt, it's a hot-weather staple that can easily be worn year-round.
How to wear it for fall: Loading up on layers is always smart when the cooler weather hits, so use tanks to your advantage. Wear them under blazers, cardigans or sweaters -- they can be a great way to add colour to your wardrobe if you live in black.

Summer trend: High-waisted skirts and waist belts
Because they flatter most body types and help slim (or create the illusion of) a narrow waist, belts are a great way to accentuate this potentially problematic area.
How to wear it for fall: "I'd wear the skirt and belt with a really great turtleneck or button-down collared shirt paired with either a boot or a stacked heel," says Fiorucci. The key? Increasing the sophistication factor with textured fabrics and looking for a shape-flattering fit.
Summer trend: The skinny pant
A longtime favourite of the slim-legged, they have the potential to work for most body shapes –- as long as they're proportioned to your body.
How to wear it for fall: "Skinny pants can be tricky to pull off," says Fiorucci, "but they're quite flattering if you find the right fit." Her suggestion for first-time skinny wearers: start with a straight-leg pant. "They're a great option because they give the slim look without you having to commit to the real thing. And if you like and feel comfortable in them, you can always go for the real thing."
The bottom line
Don't put seasonal limitations on your wardrobe. The best way to get your money's worth on any piece is to make use of it, so look for staples that can work interchangeably as the temperature rises and drops.
