Splurge vs. Save: Skincare

When it comes to skincare, how do you get the most bang for your buck? We got the lowdown from the pros about what may be overrated, and what buys are really worth your hard-earned cash.

Splurge

If your routine includes skin-protecting and anti-aging actives, opting for medical-grade formulas targeted toward your needs can be worth the extra investment. “Medical-grade products are often more expensive, but they offer effectiveness that’s validated by scientific data,” says Dr. Roni Munk, a cosmetic dermatologist and owner of the MunkMD clinic in Montreal. Think vitamin C or retinol serums that protect against environmental damage and visible signs of aging, he says.

The same goes for sunscreens, which provide crucial UV protection and should be used every day. It’s important to ensure you’re using a reputable brand that lives up to its claims, and to replace expired SPF right away for ultimate effectiveness.

When it comes to facial and body cleansers, there’s no need to pay a fortune, says Dr. Munk. “An affordable cleanser does the job just as well as a more expensive one.” Look for soap-free formulas, which help protect the integrity of your skin barrier and are available at budget-friendly price points.

Another product to save on is your daily moisturizer, he says. “Shop based on your texture preference. Whether you prefer a lighter lotion or a rich cream, it’s important to pick one that has hydrating ingredients, like ceramides, hyaluronic acid or shea butter.”
