Gwen Stefani's hairstylist talks crazy-good hair and how to get it

Danilo, the man behind Gwen Stefani's killer hair, dishes on hair blunders, pro tools and how to get great hair at home.

On a recent trip to Toronto, celeb hairstylist and Pantene global ambassador Danilo stopped in at Blo Blow Dry Bar to style the locks of select media. One at a time, he wrapped his guests in a red chiffon scarf and gave them a blowout they’ll never forget. The über-friendly expert spoke to us about great hair and life as Gwen Stefani’s mane man.

What is the biggest hair blunder that women make?
Slapping on product so that it settles in one spot instead of spreading it out over the whole head.

Any tips for achieving hair with star power?
I think it’s key to have the right tools. My T3 blow dryer finishes hair in a third of the time of the average dryer. I also like GHD’s irons—especially the new one that’s a long oval. It gives you smooth bends. Another key is to use the proper hair regimen for your hair. You have to do your homework to find the right products.

What is the one product that most women don’t use enough?
Conditioner. Women with fine hair do not condition their hair for fear of weighing it down, but they colour and blow-dry it. They constantly have style defeat because their hair doesn’t have strength at the core. Pantene has new lightweight conditioners that do the job and make your hair better.

Pantene Dry Defy shampoo and conditioner

Doing glam hair at home is hard! Any tips to make it easier?
It’s a process. The women I know who successfully style their own hair for occasions do it because they practise. They don’t practise on the day that they need it—maybe they’re just going to dinner. Practise when it’s not that big of an occasion.

What’s it like to work with Gwen Stefani on the regular?
She’s my best friend. We love each other and we have symmetry in our creative process. She’s very smart about her look and has input on her hair, makeup and outfit. Every day it’s different. What are we wearing? What do we think? I give my opinion on a hairstyle and then she says what she thinks. If we’re polar opposites, I explain why I don’t agree, or I can give her what she wants—she’s the boss; it’s her image.
