5 Benefits of Olive Oil on hair
We love olive oil in our salads and summer dishes, but did you know that this versatile oil also has a special place in our beauty routine?
Olive oil is full of moisturizing agents, vitamins and minerals that are very good for our hair. A good cold-pressed, extra-virgin olive oil is preferable to lesser quality oils, such as canola.
We give you some "scoops" on this beauty secret:
How to apply it ?
There are several choices:
- As a hot oil mask: place 1⁄4 cup of olive oil in a container immersed in boiling water and wait 5 minutes. Apply the warmed oil to dry hair as a mask. Leave on for at least 30 minutes.
OR
- As a moisturizing "booster" in your conditioner: Add 1⁄2 teaspoon of olive oil to your favourite conditioner to make it even more hydrating.
OR
- As a moisturizing mask: Combine 3 tablespoons of olive oil with 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply the mask all over your hair before shampooing. Leave on for 15 minutes.
The benefits of olive oil
1. Promote hair growth
Olive oil is said to have a protective effect on hair, which, when coated with a thin layer of oil, tends to be less brittle. Our hair ends don't break off as much, so we feel like our hair grows faster.
2. Make hair shinier
Olive oil is particularly effective on dry, brittle hair. After applying an olive oil mask, the hair is moisturized and protected, giving it a shinier and healthier look.
3. Repair broken ends
According to some studies, oil limits the amount of water introduced into our hair, which in turn reduces breakage. That's because hair gets waterlogged when it's showered and then deflates when it's dried. This phenomenon can make hair more brittle and vulnerable, especially if heated styling tools are used.
4. Reduce frizz
Frizz can be tamed with a (very small) amount of olive oil applied directly to dry, crazy hair. Simply rub a few drops of olive oil into your hands and then quickly run it over your frizz to blend in with the rest of your hair.
5. Soothe your raw scalp
If your scalp is irritated, dry and prone to dandruff, a warm olive oil mask every week can soothe the inflammation and gradually moisturize the base of your hair. A healthy scalp is essential for a lion's mane!
