All About Morpheus8: Is it right for your skin?
I just completed a series of three Morpheus8 treatments with Skin Vitality Medical Clinic, and here’s everything I’ve learned.
Having been the girl who suffered through years of cystic acne, I had the unfortunate net result of acne scarring throughout my face. It’s nothing to be ashamed of, but it can dampen one’s self-confidence, especially when you want to put your best face forward. I’ve always thought I’d have to live with this for the rest of my life—turns out I was wrong.
When I read about a treatment that could help undo the damage of scarring and minimize it permanently, I knew I needed to learn more. Morpheus8 is a radiofrequency microneedling device with a host of benefits for skin rejuvenation, including improving acne scarring. It’s the go-to treatment in medical spas today, touted by several A-list celebrities—like Kim Kardashian—as the best thing for their skin.
I just completed a series of three Morpheus8 treatments with Skin Vitality Medical Clinic, and here’s everything I’ve learned.
The benefits of Morpheus8
Morpheus8 harnesses the power of radiofrequency (RF) technology and microneedling to deliver potential amazing benefits for the skin: it can stimulate collagen production and promote tissue remodelling, which helps with skin texture by improving the look of fine lines and acne scars. Morpheus8 can also help even out skin tone by fading the look of hyperpigmentation, creating a more uniform complexion. You can also expect a tightening of the skin, particularly in areas prone to laxity such as the jawline and neck. It’s a super-powered facial that will if nothing else, help the overall condition of the skin.
The Drawbacks of Morpheus8
However, not everyone qualifies for Morpheus8. If you have active acne, it’s best not to go into a session until your acne has calmed down. Additionally, if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding or have a pacemaker or defibrillator, you don’t qualify for the treatment.
Morpheus8 can cause minor bruising and reactions in the skin that typically dissipate within a week or two. If you have a tanning habit, you shouldn’t do the treatment either.
What to Expect in a Morpheus8 Session
When you go in for a Morpheus8 treatment, you can first expect a consultation to assess skin concerns and whether or not you’re a good candidate for the sessions. Then comes preparation, where they cleanse your skin and have a numbing cream applied for a more comfortable procedure, which takes full effect after about 45 minutes.
Then comes the actual treatment. The Morpheus8 device has ultra-fine microneedles and RF energy. This device gets stamped on the skin (face and neck) until each area is complete. The sensation feels like a small stapler going into your skin and right out. It’s mildly painful, particularly around the sensitive areas of the neck and forehead but tolerable. Once complete, you’ll feel a little bit of pain and heat, but it subsides in about 10 minutes. My face looked really red, but the redness only lasted 24 hours. You’re then given post-treatment care to follow for the next seven days.
The Downtime Experience
One of the most amazing things about Morpheus8 is that it has very minimal downtime for such a powerful treatment. By the time you get home from your treatment, the pain is gone. You’ll look like you got a sunburn. Mild swelling lasts for a day or two.
Avoid washing your face or putting any cream on for about 24 hours after treatment. Then you can use a very gentle moisturizer without fragrances and some sunscreen. I personally followed these steps for about a week. I also avoided wearing makeup for a week, even though you can start putting on light makeup after about 3 to 4 days. Once the first week is over, you can put your makeup back on and slowly incorporate active skincare ingredients into your routine.
Is Morpheus8 Worth It?
The photo on the left is one hour after treatment. The photo on the right shows results after five days.
The best way to answer this question is to mention my own results, which will vary by person. The first improvement I noticed was the condition of my skin overall. My pores look smaller and cleaner, and my face has a healthy glow. I would also say that my complexion looks more even. I didn’t have much laxity in the chin and neck, but I definitely noticed that it gave a slightly more snatched appearance.
In terms of acne scarring, it takes longer to see improvement. Your skin is still creating new collagen for up to three months after the last treatment. Scars are the hardest thing to get rid of. I’m weeks out from seeing the full results of the acne scarring benefits, but I’m seeing minor improvements—they’re still there, but they look less deep. I’m excited to see the full result in the coming months.
If you’re looking for skin rejuvenation, I’d suggest looking into Morpheus8 and consulting a dermatologist.
