5 money-saving hair hacks
Go ahead and splurge on colour and cuts, but when it comes to styling and treatments don't be ashamed to save a little (money and time)! Check out these five easy hair hacks.
You’d be surprised at how many hair-helpers you can find in your own home. Next time you need a nourishing hair mask or a boost for your roots, just take a peek through your cupboards. Grace De Rose, hairstylist at Toronto’s Her Majesty’s Pleasure spa and Lisa Belkin, author of The Cosmetic Cookbook, share their tips.
1. Treat yourself at home
Save on salon hair treatments by making your own. Open your refrigerator and look for Belkin’s favourite ingredients for hair: olive oil, honey, coconut oil, bananas, eggs and Greek yogurt. You don’t have to have your recipe down to a science. Just make up a potion of whatever you’ve got, mix it into a paste and apply to damp hair. “Wrap hair in plastic wrap or a shower cap and apply a hot towel,” says Belkin. “Let it penetrate for 15 or 20 minutes, then rinse it off.”
2. Sleep on it
Increasing the volume of your hair is so easy that you can do it in your sleep. “Sleeping with hair in a topknot adds volume,” says De Rose. “Adding a root-lift mousse helps, too.” Gather and secure hair at the very top of your head so that you can still rest comfortably on your pillow.
3. Twist for texture
Get any textured ’do without the hot tools. “To get curls, waves and texture, sleeping with braids or a bun does the trick,” says De Rose. Just throw hair into a few cute pigtails before bed, unravel in the morning and voilà—low maintenance waves. This styling trick won’t cause heat damage and is ideal for getting ready in the morning fast.
4. DIY dry shampoo
Save on dry shampoo with baby powder or cornstarch. When applied to hair, either powder will soak up excess oil and banish limp locks. Sprinkle lightly onto the top of your head, let sit for several minutes to soak up the oil, then run your fingers through your hair to remove excess.
5. Maximum moisture
Make your trims last longer by applying coconut oil to the ends of your hair. This hydrating ingredient can prevent brittle strands and keep split ends at bay.
