Based in Rockwood, Ont., Hides in Hand is a leather goods company with a mandate we can get behind. Why? Simple—it makes use of hides gathered by local, licenced hunters. MEANINGFUL ART
If you’ll be in Toronto before March 19, 2023, you’ve got to check out renowned Cree artist Kent Monkman’s major solo exhibition, Being Legendary, at the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). Monkman’s body of work includes 35 new paintings, our favourite being Battle of the piyêsiwak and the misipisiwak (right), as well as sculptures and etchings. The exhibition is inspired by the cultural belongings that exist in the museum’s permanent collections. The artist says his goal is to “convey the incredible depth and richness of Indigenous existence on Turtle Island…
I want to emphasize the power of Indigenous peoples in keeping many of our cultures, histories and knowledge systems intact and pay tribute to all those involved in reviving our languages and cultural practices.” Goal beautifully met.
