When you were little...

Thanks to movies like National Lampoon's Family Vacation, holidays en famille have got a bad reputation. But with the right planning, the right packing and — most importantly — the right attitude, you'll want to hit the road again and again. For Canadian Living editorial director Kathy Ullyott's road trip story and tips on how everybody on board can have the holiday of his or her dreams, check out "On the Road (Again)" in the June issue of Canadian Living, where we promised you the following car quiz that connects kids with grandparents. Plus, click here for tips on travelling with pets.

If you spend a lot of time in your car with the kids, whether vacationing or just going from here to there, build their brains with a copy of Carschooling: Over 350 Entertaining Games & Activities to Turn Travel Time into Learning Time — for Kids Ages 4 to 17 by Diane Flynn Keith (Prima Publishing, 2002). Learn how you have fun while building your kids' brains with games, group activities, resources and audiobooks, journalling ideas and more.

The activity we loved for an intergenerational trip is called "Family History in Seven Questions."

"On a cross-country carschooling trip to visit relatives, the Hunt family composed seven questions to ask grandparents that would reveal their personal history. When they arrived, they tape-recorded the answers to create an audio version of their family history." Havint the kids ask their grandparents the following seven quesitons may lead to some interesting geography and history lessons, as well as help the kids learn about their roots and to se their grands as whole people.
