Our Canada: Surrey, B.C.
Why I'm proud to be from Surrey

Surrey has come a long way! When I was growing up, it had a gritty reputation. Even though that reputation still lingers, today I feel it's part of the city's charm. Surrey is home to a huge portion of the Agricultural Land Reserve, which means that a lot of local produce is grown here. This results in the opportunity to eat local and connect directly with the farmers who grow and raise the food we eat. In addition, Surrey is not only the fastest growing municipality in the Lower Mainland, but it brings with it an impressive ethnic diversity.
What visitors should see and do when they visit Surrey
Known as the City of Parks, Surrey has more than 200 green areas. My favourite is Redwood Park, which boasts 50 varieties of trees, both native and exotic, across its 16 hectares.
Crescent Beach is a great location for families looking to avoid the crowds at neighbouring White Rock Beach. It's the perfect place to fly a kite, grab some fish and chips or soak up the sun.
You'll find many blueberry farms in Surrey. During blueberry season (July to September), there are prepicked and you-pick options available at significantly better prices than what you'll pay at the grocery store.
Where visitors should eat when they visit Surrey
Because of Surrey's diversity, the city has plenty of great ethnic gems. Here are two of my restaurants:
1) Pho Tam: Located in the heart of Whalley, Pho Tam is by far the best Vietnamese restaurant in the city. Be sure to get the pho, spring rolls and wonton soup combo. You won't find better grilled lemongrass chicken and spareribs anywhere.
2) Chef Kebab is an amazing Indian restaurant for authentic cuisine at a good price. The paneer and fish pakoras are amazing but the stars of the show are the kebabs.

Casting for Season three is open now at CTV.ca/MasterChefCanada.
