5 ways to make a difference in your community
1. Give a child the gift of music
Children living in isolated northern communities get to experience a love of music with your donation of new or gently used guitars, ukuleles, harmonicas, keyboards, recorders or small rhythm instruments to the ArtsCan Circle drop-off centre in Toronto.
2. Help build someone's self-esteem
For women in shelters, drop-in centres and transition homes, a night to forget their worries is a miracle. Beauty Night in Vancouver – an evening of dignity-restoring massages, manicures and haircuts – accepts unopened skin-care products, makeup and more.
3. Provide warmth in the cold of winter
Handy with knitting needles? Provide finished blankets – or even just yarn, fabric and other supplies – to Blankets for Canada in Lethbridge, AB, and they'll go to Canadians in need of shelter.
4. Make someone's house a home
For the many Canadians who go hungry every day, food isn't the only thing they need. That's why the Parker Street Food & Furniture Bank in Halifax also accepts furniture, computers, printers
and scanners.
5. Offer a kid the chance to play
When you donate new or gently used hockey, soccer or baseball gear to Winnipeg's KidSport Manitoba, kids get more than the chance to participate in organized sports they couldn't otherwise afford – they get the chance to discover a lifelong passion for active living.
We have lots more information on how you can volunteer in your community, including how to make time for giving back.
