10 reasons you Should Plan a Trip to Virginia as Soon as the Borders Open!
Are you dreaming of a nice getaway for your summer vacations? While we are all waiting (and hoping) for the borders to reopen and for our international travel plans to resume, we want to help you get your bucket list ready for your next trip to the beautiful state of Virginia, merely a few hours’ drive from home. Here are 10 reasons why you should plan going to Virginia soon!
1. It’s Only a Short Drive Away
Virginia is the perfect road trip destination! It's about 1,000 kilometers from Toronto, a pleasant 10-hour drive that will take you through the east coast of the United States.
2. You Can Swim in Warm Waters
Who said it was impossible to swim in warm waters this close to Canada? Water in Virginia is perfect for a dip during the hot summer days. And it’s not one of those quick get-in-get-out swims … the water can actually go up to 28 degrees which means you can play in the water as long as you like. With its 180 kilometres of coastlines, you can easily find a nice spot to play. Don’t forget to stop by the Virginia Beach boardwalk during your stay!
3. You Can Go Wine Tasting
With over 300 vineyards to choose from, you can wine taste your way around the state and become a pro. Or, if you prefer beer, there are plenty of breweries to please you too!
4. It’s a Foodies’ Destination
Yes! Virginia is a foodie’s destination! And if you are a fan of seafood, you are in for a treat. The Virginia Oyster Trail takes you along the Chesapeake Bay from Oyster farms to restaurants where you can taste the region’s delicacies. If you’re up for it, you can learn more about mariculture.
5. You Can Go Hiking for Days
Virginia is not only the coastline, it’s forests and mountains too! For those who like to get lost in nature, head to the mountains of Shenandoah National Park. You’ll see waterfalls, fields of wildflowers and spectacular views you never thought you’d see this close to home. If you prefer driving to vista points, add to your road trip the Skyline drive and Blue Ridge Parkway, which are also great to explore on motorcycle or bicycle.
6. You Can Relive History
So many things have happened through history in Virginia! Learn about them in museums and visit incredible historic sites. Mount Vernon, Georges Washington’s mansion, sure is a popular one, and so is the Arlington National cemetery or Colonial Williamsburg, just to name these three.
7. You Can Explore Underground
You need to add caverns’ exploration to your bucket list for the summer and Virginia has eight of them! The most popular ones are Luray Caverns and Shenandoah where you can observe amazing rock formations and natural wonders.
8. It’s a Sailor’s Paradise
Apart from the ocean, there are tons of amazing lakes you can sail, paddle, glide on in Virginia. Claytor Lake State Park, Lake Anna and Lake Gaston are some of the lakes that will give you plenty of space to practise your favourite water activity. If you are a fan of the movie Dirty Dancing, you must visit Smith Mountain Lake which continues to offer Dirty Dancing weekends
9. It’s for Street Art Lovers
The city of Richmond is known for its rich street art culture. You can find more than 150 murals as you walk around downtown. From colourful pieces to creative ones, local and national artists have used the streets as a canvas and it’s time for you to admire their work.
To encourage the local creative community and their crafts, visit the ViBe Creative District at the Oceanfront District. You won't be disappointed!
10. Bike Around the Best Trails
Do not forget to bring your bikes on your road trip because the state has some amazing bike trails to explore whether you’re a pro or just an amateur. The High Bridge Trail and the Virginia Creeper Trail are definitely two for the bucket list.
