How to Encourage Kids to Read During the Summer

School is out—it’s time to start planning your holiday activities.

We understand it’s tiring to entertain the whole family all the time, so why not try to foster the hobby of reading for children? Without the structure of the school year, kids can explore books at their own pace and discover the joy of reading for pleasure.

Here are some tips and strategies to encourage kids to read during the summer.

1. Create a Reading-Friendly Environment

  • Set Up a Cozy Reading Nook: Designate a special spot in your home where kids can curl up with a book. Make it inviting with comfortable seating, good lighting and a selection of books.
  • Stock Up on Books: Visit the library or a local bookstore together and let your child pick out books that interest them. Include a variety of genres to keep their choices diverse.

2. Incorporate Reading into Daily Routines

  • Set a Reading Time: Establish a daily reading time, such as before bed or after lunch. This routine helps make reading a regular part of their day.
  • Read Together: Spend time reading with your child. Whether it's reading aloud to them or taking turns reading pages, shared reading experiences can be rewarding.

3. Choose the Right Books

  • Follow Their Interests: Find books that match your child's hobbies and interests, whether it's fantasy, science, sports or animals.
  • Series and Sequels: Introduce them to a new book series. Once they're hooked on the first book, they'll be eager to continue with the rest.
  • Age-Appropriate Picks: Ensure the books are suitable for their reading level to avoid frustration and encourage confidence.

4. Make Reading Fun

  • Interactive Books: Look for books with interactive elements, such as lift-the-flap books for younger kids or choose-your-own-adventure books for older children.
  • Reading Challenges: Create a summer reading challenge with a list of books to read. Offer small rewards for completing books or reaching milestones.
  • Book Clubs: If you have a teenager, organize a book club with their friends. They can meet weekly to discuss the book they've read, fostering a sense of community and shared excitement about reading.
  • Libraries: Consider visiting your local library and seeing what programs they have. For instance, many libraries organize book clubs and movie nights, which will encourage your kids to spend more time in these havens of knowledge.

5. Integrate Technology

  • E-Books and Audiobooks: Utilize e-books and audiobooks, especially if your child enjoys screen time. Many libraries offer free digital loans of paperback books.
  • Educational Apps: Use reading apps and educational games that promote literacy skills in an engaging way.

6. Model Reading Behaviour

  • Be a Role Model: Let your child see you reading regularly. Talk about the books you're reading and share your enthusiasm.
  • Family Reading Time: Dedicate a time when everyone in the family reads their own books together, promoting a culture of reading in your home.

7. Connect Books with Activities

  • Book-Related Activities: Plan activities related to the books they read. For instance, if they read a book about space, visit a planetarium or watch a documentary about the universe.
  • Creative Projects: Encourage them to draw scenes from the book, write an alternative ending, or create a book review or a mini-presentation.

8. Encourage Writing

  • Journaling: Give your child a journal to write about their summer adventures or their thoughts on the books they read.
  • Story Writing: Inspire them to write their own stories. This not only improves writing skills but also deepens their appreciation for storytelling.

9. Use Incentives Wisely

  • Reward System: Set up a reward system for reading goals. Rewards could include extra playtime, a special treat or a small toy.
  • Celebrate Achievements: Celebrate their reading milestones with a small party or a special outing.
