Why I love Singles Awareness Day
Every year, single men and women dread Valentine's Day or Singles Awareness Day (SAD) as it's lovingly been dubbed. And I used to be one of those people who hated this stupid day all about couples showing their love and making us single people feel bad because we're alone on a holiday that's all about couples. But then I realized Valentine's Day isn't about couples, it's about love and love comes in many different packages. Every
Singles Awareness Day I spend with my friends. My dear friend Anna and I made a tradition of going out to dinner on Valentine's Day. We would be surrounded by couples all dressed up for their romantic dates. We were not dressed up and had our hair in ponytails
—we were as happy as could be. There was no pressure on us to make this day perfectly romantic, we were just enjoying hanging out. Last year I sent funny Valentine's Day text messages to all my friends telling them how much I loved them. And this year I'm going to send my single friends funny cards like the
one pictured above. This is the great thing about Singles Awareness Day, you get to have multiple Valentines. You don't have to make this day about your romantic relationship and you certainly feel no pressure about
finding the perfect gift. Instead, on SAD you spend the day showing your friends how much you appreciate them. And the amazing thing about SAD is it makes you realize how not having a boyfriend/girlfriend/wife/husband doesn't mean you aren't loved. And it most certainly doesn't mean you are alone. In fact SAD reminds me how many amazing people I have in my life and how deeply I love them. So this SAD, I will not be
one of those women moping about because I don't have a boyfriend to give me flowers. Instead I will be enjoying having multiple Valentines who I can shower with love.
