Winning an Oscar is the highlight of an actor's career. But along with the gold statue, Academy Award winners take home the Oscar relationship curse. It's not a proven scientific fact that when you win an Oscar you get a divorce, but that tends to be what happens. Especially for Best Actress winners. Sandra Bullock won her Best Actress statue in 2010 for her role in The Blind Side. And just a month later her husband, Jesse James, publicly admitted that he had cheated on her. In April of that year Sandra filed for divorce. Reese Witherspoon won her Oscar in 2006 after she played June Carter Cash in Walk the Line. Like, Sandra Bullock, Reese's marriage to actor Ryan Phillippe crumbled later that year amongst infidelity rumours. The list goes on —Kate Winslet, Hilary Swank, Charlize Theron, Hally Berry and Julia Roberts have all suffered the curse of the Oscar. And of course the Best Actor winners aren't immune to the curse either with Sean Penn's marriage to Robin Wright ending after he won his Academy Award for Milk. The question is why, why does winning an Oscar ruin your marriage? I think it's a jealousy issue for some couples, especially if both of them are actors. It can be hard to see your partner obtain the highest level of success when your career is struggling, ahem Ryan Phillippe. For other couples, the pressure and media attention that comes with Awards season can be too much to handle. I think this was the case for Jesse and Sandra. Jesse couldn't deal with the pressure of his wife being a Hollywood darling and the two of them being depicted as the perfect couple so he acted out. So who will the Oscar curse strike this year? Cate Blanchett is the likely winner for Best Actress and her marriage to writer Andrew Upton has already survived one Oscar, so I think —or hope —she will be immune to the curse. I also hope Matthew McConaughey, the tipped winner for Best Actor, does not fall victim to the Oscar curse. He and his wife Camilla Alves seem pretty solid and are just so gorgeous together. There are many examples of actors who have lived through the curse. Helen Mirren, Meryl Streep (who has three Oscars) and Colin Firth to name a few. I think some actors are able to escape the curse because they don't let Awards season hype go to their heads. And it seems to me like both Matthew and Cate aren't effected by all the fuss around them. For their marriage's sake, I hope they aren't. Who do you think will win an Oscar this weekend?
