The Benefits of Eggnog
Eggnog and Christmas. Christmas and Eggnog. Like beans and cornbread, Brad and Angelina, Quebec and crazy drivers, they go together. How else could we tolerate our crazy relatives and the forced joviality of these once a year meetings? What comes to mind for me, though, is an old episode of the Jack Benny Show. Rochester has just made the ‘nog and Jack wonders aloud why anyone would think of mixing eggs and bourbon?
“That’s purely psychological,” replies Rochester.
“You see, the eggs make you think you’re getting something very healthful and the bourbon makes that fact unimportant.” How true… But when I asked nutritionist
Theresa Albert what the health benefits of eggnog were, her response was quick and simple:
"None."
Still, if you have to endure another homespun Christmas sweater from Aunty Margaret, some fortification is always recommended. Here's a great CL recipe for
Classic Eggnog. It only uses 16 eggs, and a moderate cup and a half of bourbon, (though I'm sure that can be upped as required....) You know, the McCaigs are actually teetotalers so this, as always, will be a dry Christmas. So if you've got a spare moment, raise a glass for me as I soberly smile and watch the next generation experience the joy of unwrapping the homespun.
