What would you do if you discovered your child was switched at birth?
Two baby girls were born at a clinic in Cannes, France on July 4, 1994. They both suffered from jaundice and were put in the same incubator in an effort to treat it. Once the jaundice was under control, a nurse mistakenly handed each of the babies back to the wrong set of parents. As the babies grew up, one of the fathers started questioning his paternity because his daughter, Manon, looked nothing like him. He had a paternity test done when she was 10 years old and discovered he was not a biological parent. Even more shocking, neither was her mother. They set out to find the daughter they gave birth to and managed to arrange a meeting with her and her parents. "It was a pretty disturbing moment," said Manon "You find yourself in front of a woman who is biologically your mother but who is a stranger." The whole situation proved very difficult for both families (the second family involved has chosen not to speak publicly) and have distanced each other since the initial meeting. "It's too difficult, so we each went our separate ways as it's so distressing." said Sophie Serano, Manon's mom. "It was the only way to find some stability again." Neither family asked for the girls to be switched back. Both families took the case to court and just recently, the clinic was ordered to compensate the girls, their parents and siblings 1.88 million euros ($2.13 million). This story prompted a conversation with a few friends about what they would do if they found out that the child they had raised as their own wasn't theirs biologically. Not surprisingly, every last one of them said that whether they had birthed that baby or not, it was very much their child. The bonding had already taken place - over daily things like scraped knees and bedtime stories. I totally agree. But wouldn't a part of you - as the biological parent - long for the child that is rightfully yours?
