Student gets banned from school for shaving head in support of friend battling cancer
Kamryn Redfro's best friend Delaney Clements is battling cancer. She recently started chemotherapy. As a means of support, Kamryn shaved her head. "I did it so she didn't have to feel left out."/Kamryn Such a beautiful act of kindness. A wonderful testament to the young girls friendship. "It made me feel very special and that I'm not alone."/Delaney Kamryn returned to school on Monday and was told that having a shaved head is in violation of the school's dress code. She could only return to class if she got a wig or her natural hair grew back. Kamryn's mom, Wendy e-mailed the school to explain the situation, but administrators refused to let her back, saying they could not make any exceptions. A statement addressing the school's dress code policy reads
"Caprock Academy does have a detailed dress code policy, which was created to promote safety, uniformity, and a non-distracting environment for the school's students. Under this policy, shaved heads are not permitted." Where is the compassion here? Sometimes we need to make an exception to the rule and lead with our heart, especially in a situation like this. The school officials should have stood behind this brave little girl and promoted this act of kindness. After this story broke, the school did say they would be making an exception. Kamryn was able to attend classes yesterday.
What do you think of the message the school officials sent young Kamryn?
