Sooo, Jason Collins is gay. Is this REALLY big news? Our impressionable young adults sure don't think so.
Soooo, Jason Collins is gay.
Collins' revelation makes him the first athlete in one of the four major North American professional team sports to tell the public he’s gay.
Is it surprising to you that Jason Collins coming out as a gay basketball player is making such big news?
It is to me.
As I see it, this type of information should be a non-issue.
But how do our impressionable young adults feel about the news?
Is it a non-issue to them as well?
Well, I asked a few of them how they felt about the news and this is what they had to say.
"It doesn't matter to me. It shouldn't reflect who he is as a player and how well he plays the game. Good for him for coming out." – Stefanie, age 16 "He's awesome and a great role model." – Lyndsie, age 16 "An amazing step in the right direction. It's a little funny how the media has latched on to a story that is probably such a normal part of Collins' life, but at the same time I can understand why it's important to cover this. I can only see this as positive reinforcement for other athletes to follow in Collins' footsteps." – Phillip, age 24 "Is he good? Yes! OK, that's all that matters." – Richard, age 17 "Good for him! In a masculine dominated organization/industry, it's great of him to come forward with his sexuality." – Meghan, age 17 "He shouldn't have to tell anyone about his sexuality. If he walks in with his boyfriend, who cares. They're just playing basketball." - Tristan, age 13 "He's brave. I admire him." - Mahendra, age 14 "I can't believe that he is the first active pro sport player to come out. It's not a big deal. It doesn't change my opinion of him at all nor should it change the perception of the game. - Jordyn, age 17 "Personally, I think it's really brave of him to come out about his sexuality knowing the hardships that he is now going to face. I can imagine that it will be an inspiration to other athletes who are not upfront about their sexuality and maybe now that he has admitted it, others will come forward as well. I admire him for his decision." – Courtney, age 16Well, it appears that our young adults don't really see Jason Collins coming out as such a big deal. According to them... It doesn't change him as a person. It doesn't change his performance on the court. And it certainly doesn't change their opinion of him. And that to me is the best news of all. What about you? What are your thoughts on Jason Collins coming out?
