I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've never made an
RRSP contribution. I have a student loan and a small line of credit that I'd rather pay off first. And while I do allocate five percent of my paycheques to a corporate pension plan, I'm
saving only half of the 10 percent recommended for retirement by personal finance gurus like
David Chilton, author of The Wealthy Barber. It turns out I'm in the same boat as a lot of Ontarians. According to a recent study commissioned by Meridian, an Ontario credit union, 40 percent of us are forgoing retirement
savings in favour of paying down personal debt, whether it's loans, credit cards or mortgages. Another 10 percent aren't saving for
retirement for an entirely different reason: They're living paycheque to paycheque. Here are some other facts and figures from the study:
