Shoes are so much more than a fashion statement. They're a source of protection against illness and
injury, a means of getting from one place to another and a way of keeping active. But many people around the world don't have a simple pair of shoes. From May 5 to 21, you can help by posting a picture of your own bare feet on Instagram, with the hashtag
#withoutshoes as part of the
One Day Without Shoes campaign. For each post, Toms has committed to
donating a pair of shoes to a child in need, potentially giving up to one million shoes to the people who can benefit from them most. According to research, giving children access to school uniforms, including shoes, can increase school attendance by up to 62 percent. What's more, millions live with
podoconiosis, a disease that causes debilitating pain and swelling in the feet and legs. And without shoes, people are susceptible to water- and soil-borne illnesses that are transmitted through the feet. Consider the joy you feel when you buy a brand new pair of shoes. Now imagine what a child must feel when receiving their only pair, the pair that will get them to school, to the doctor's—wherever they need to go. Toms is known for matching every pair of shoes you buy with a pair given to a child in need, but until May 21 all you have to do is post a photo #withoutshoes. So let's see your toes!
