Grumpy Cat is the newest Grinch this holiday season
Guest post by Katherine George Grumpy Cat is about to become a movie star, and she couldn’t look more displeased. The frisky feline is moving from Internet sensation to small-screen stardom in the new Lifetime holiday special
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever. No amount of festive sweets or stocking stuffers can turn this frown upside down. There’s a new Grinch in town.
Grumpy Cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, is two years old and the queen of sarcastic Internet memes. This celebrity cat’s claim to fame is her signature scowl, which earned her the apt moniker. The smug mug that brings us to laughter is due to feline dwarfism. Grumpy Cat’s celeb status began after a photo was posted on Reddit in September 2012 and quickly escalated. Since then, she’s managed to claw her way to success with various merchandising deals, a coffee brand, personal websites, two books and countless TV appearances on shows such as
Anderson
Cooper Live,
Good Morning America,
Today and
CBS Evening News. She was voted the most influential cat of 2012 by MSNBC, received Meme of the Year at the 2013 Webby Awards and had her own event at last year’s SXSW. And now, she’s the feature of a TV movie. Filmed this past summer,
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever will depict the story of a lonely cat living in a mall pet shop. Constantly overlooked by passing customers, Grumpy Cat, voiced by Aubrey Plaza of
Parks and Recreation, develops an unhappy outlook on life. Chyrstal, a 12-year-old girl, takes a shining to this sour kitty and forms an unlikely friendship, as she soon realizes she’s the only one who can hear the cat talk. Amid the holiday rush, Grumpy Cat reluctantly thwarts a dog-napping, then she’s tasked with rescuing Chyrstal after the mall closes on Christmas Eve. Tune in to find out whether Grumpy Cat can learn the true meaning of Christmas. Meow, humbug!
Grumpy Cat’s Worst Christmas Ever premières Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. EST on Lifetime. And to find out more about Grumpy Cat's latest book, read more at
