An alternative to New Year's resolutions
I always really dislike this time of year—
New Year's resolution time. I hate planning to make all these changes for the next year that I know I'm not going to stick to. I always plan to get in shape. Then I remember I'm the most accident prone person around. I always vow to stop swearing. Then on January 2, I inevitably let out an expletive. I think my problem is that it just seems too daunting to make a goal that has to last an entire year. That's a long time and a lot can change in that time. Some people are great at
making resolutions and sticking to them. I am not one of those people. So this year I was inspired to not make New Year's resolutions, but instead to make monthly resolutions.
I got the idea after one of my lovely friends gave me this monthly calendar, pictured above, from
Blushface Paper Goods. Above each calendar is a place to write down your monthly goals. I love this! Now I can make goals that are realistic for me each month. No more planning for an entire year. I also love that I can focus on so many different goals throughout the year. I want to be more adventurous this year. Now I don't want to be more adventurous every day for an entire year—yes I'm a chicken. Instead I can pick a month where my goal is to try something adventurous. I'm really excited to make a plan each month about something I want to achieve. And really I think that's the whole point of making resolutions, to be
excited about the changes to come instead of knowing you will fail. So here's to a great month ahead. My first goal is to do the
6-week slim down. Wish me and my uncoordinated body luck.
What are your New Year's resolutions?
