Academy Awards 2015 nomination snubs
The Academy (6,000 or so movie folk) have spoken and the nominations for the 2015 Academy Awards have been announced. Among the pleasant surprises (Laura Dern's nod for
Wild) there were some obvious snubs. Here are our picks for films that could have been shown a little more love.
The LEGO Movie This is not awesome at all (cue the tune which actually received a nod for Best Original Song)! It is hard to believe this movie is not on the list for Best Animated Feature. I have a 10-year-old so I see my share of animated movies. This was one of those where I laughed as much, or more, than my child. I guess the $260-million the movie took in worldwide will have to be enough for the studio.
David Oyelowo and Ava DuVernay for Selma
Selma, the biopic about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
is only in limited release, but based on reviews (scoring a 99 percent fresh rating on film site
rottentomatoes.com) these are huge omissions. I always wonder how films that are shut out of the acting and directing categories are still deemed worthy of a Best Picture nomination. Oyelowo was considered a lock for his performance. Only four women in the history of the Academy Awards have ever been nominated for Best Director (Kathryn Bigelow is the only win for
The Hurt Locker in 2010). DuVernay would have been the first African American woman to receive the honour.
Gone Girl The most-talked about film of the year landed just one one big nomination—Best Actress for Rosamund Pike. Perhaps the Academy preferred the book. Not that anyone thought Ben Affleck would get a nod, but director David Fincher was considered a contender and the film could have squeaked in as the final selection for Best Picture. Now we'll just have to wait and see who wins on
