5 reasons we love Arlene Dickinson
Have you seen our April issue with an opening feature from the fabulous Arlene Dickinson? We love having Arlene as this month's Woman of the Hour. Obviously Arlene is a savvy entrepreneur and investor, and we all love watching her on
Dragons' Den, but we admire her for more than just her business sense. Here are five reasons we love Arlene Dickinson.
1. She stands her ground in a room full of men. If you’ve ever seen
Dragons' Den, you’ve seen Arlene take on the show’s capitalist cynic, Kevin O’Leary. Kevin might be notoriously outspoken, but Arlene doesn’t back down on her opinions or values either, and she's never afraid to let her fellow dragon know when he’s crossing a line.
2. She sees the people behind the businesses. In our April issue, Arlene spoke of 83-year-old Sam Koffski who went on
Dragons' Den with a good idea that had been saddled with decades of manufacturing issues and an expired patent. Though the other dragons passed, Arlene saw his dream and wanted to keep it alive. She also saw a good idea that could be great, and she helped him take it there.
3. She’s frank about the downside of success. In her new book,
All In, Arlene shares the toll that a commitment to business can take on relationships. She opens an honest dialogue about what success means, and the lessons she’s learned about the entrepreneurial lifestyle.
4. She gives her time and support to charitable organizations. As a mom and grandmother, Arlene has a special concern for kids. She’s the National Spokesperson for Breakfast Clubs of Canada and has served on the board for Kids Help Phone.
5. She uses her success to inspire others to believe in themselves. In the video below, you can see how Arlene uses her story to help others. Here she shares some of the most teaching moments of her life, including the time when she realized as a young, uneducated and financially unstable woman that she needed to find a way to take control of her life. It’s hard not to be amazed at how far she’s come. [HTML1]
