How To Get Rid Of Streaks On Your Stainless Steel Appliances
Stainless steel appliances add a sleek flair to your kitchen design, but they can be magnets for greasy fingers and marks. Here’s how to best clean them.
If you own a stainless steel fridge, stove, dishwasher, or microwave, you know how frustrating it can be to keep it clean. From grease to handprints to water drops, these appliances often get the short end of the stick of kitchen messes.
Luckily, it’s easy to tidy and polish even the grimiest of stainless steel.
1. Supplies
- Stainless steel cleaner (spray or cream), or white vinegar and mineral oil
- Baking soda
- Warm water
- Two microfibre cloths
2. Cleaning your appliance
As explained by kitchen manufacturer Maytag, take note of the direction of the grain—the small lines—on your appliance. For a streak-free clean, ensure you’re following the grain.

First, give your appliance a once-over with a microfibre cloth dampened with warm water to get rid of stuck-on grime.
Next, apply the cleaner of your choice. Use a designated stainless steel spray or cream, then wipe with a cloth in the direction of the grain. If you prefer natural ingredients, opt for a one-to-one mixture of white vinegar and mineral oil.
Finally, use a dry microfibre cloth to buff out any remaining marks and to shine up your appliance. If you still have any discolouration or extra-tough marks, try using a blend of baking soda and vinegar to get them off.
Products to avoid putting on stainless steel
Never use harsh abrasives to clean your appliances, no matter how dirty they are. Textured cleaners like steel wool or scrub brushes can scratch up the delicate finishes.
Additionally, avoid any products that contain bleach, alcohol, ammonia, or chlorides.
