How To Eliminate Bad Odours From Shoes

We all have a stinky pair of shoes in our wardrobe that we think is beyond repair.

Summer heat can cause excessive sweating of the feet, which means odour-causing bacteria is thriving.

You might think that the only solution is to throw away a smelly pair of shoes, but luckily we've found a few tricks to reverse bad smells and let you enjoy your favourite footwear again.

Here are three tips that will help your shoes smell fresh as a daisy:

Mix a few drop of tea tree oil (it has antibacterial properties) with a few tablespoons of baking soda. Sprinkle generously on the inside of your shoes and let sit for 24 hours. Shake out excess powder before wearing.

According to several tests, freezing has the power to eliminate bacteria. Place your smelly shoes in a bag and stick them in the freezer. Take them out after 24 hours and let defrost before wearing.

Spray with alcohol

Alcohol is an antiseptic that kills bacteria. It dries quickly, so you can put your shoes on within minutes of treatment.

How to keep your shoes fresh

After disinfecting your shoes with the tips above, you can deodorize them:

  • Slip a bar of soap into your shoes. Soap is porous and will absorb any remaining odours.
  • Place fabric softener sheets in your shoes after each use.
  • Soak cotton balls or newspaper in essential oil and place them in your shoes.
