How To Clean Salt Stains Off Your Winter Boots
Chances are your favourite winter boots are going to get damaged by the elements—especially road salt. Here’s how to make them look like new again.
While salt sprinkled on city sidewalks is helpful for avoiding slips and falls, it can leave unsightly white stains on your shoes. These marks can damage leather, suede, nubuck, and even synthetic fabrics. Luckily, there are simple tricks to help restore your favourite pair to their former glory.
How to remove salt stains from winter boots
1. Have the right tools
First, you'll need a soft brush (ideally suede), a clean cloth, warm water, and a cleaning solution. For smooth leathers, a soft cloth like a microfibre towel will do the trick, while for suede or nubuck, a soft-bristled brush will keep the fibres from bunching.
2. The technique
Although there are excellent specialized products on the market, you can turn to white vinegar as a natural (and economical) cleaning solution. Mix one part white vinegar with two parts warm water. Lightly soak the cloth or brush in the mixture, then gently rub the salt stains. The vinegar dissolves the calcium residue without damaging the material. All that's left to do is to blot up the excess moisture with a dry cloth.

3. Drying and maintenance
Let your boots dry in the open air at room temperature, away from a direct heat source (no boots on the electric heater!). Once your boots are completely dry, apply a protective product—such as a waterproofer suitable for the material—to prevent future damage.

4. Protecting your boots long-term
To prevent stains from returning, get in the habit of cleaning your boots as soon as traces of salt appear. Regular maintenance and a moisturizing balm will extend the life of your well-loved pair.
