7 tips to get rid of fruit flies
It's almost inevitable. No matter how often we clean the kitchen and protect our food, these little fruit flies find a way to come and bother us.
To get rid of them, we prefer a more natural process avoiding using chemical products, here some suggestions.
As a preventive measure:
- Wash your fruits and vegetables well and avoid leaving them on the counter for too long.
- Quickly wipe off any surfaces where food or beverages may have spilled.
- Empty the garbage can and compost container regularly.
- Place a few wine corks in your fruit bowl. It is said that the smell of cork scares flies away.
If they are visible:
- Fill a small glass or bowl with apple cider vinegar. Cover with plastic wrap tightly fitted with a rubber band. Punch a few holes in the film. The flies will be attracted to the vinegar and once inside, they will not be able to get out. If you don't have apple cider vinegar, use beer, wine, or a piece of ripe fruit.
- Mix apple cider vinegar with a little dish soap in a small bowl. Mix well. Once the flies are well attracted to the vinegar, the soap will make the surface of the liquid too sticky for them to escape.
- Place a piece of banana (or apple cider vinegar, wine or beer) in the bottom of a glass. Make a paper cone and place it on the glass, mouthpiece down. The hole in the mouth of the cone should be very small. The flies should be able to enter, but not exit. Seal the cone to the glass with tape. Place the trap in the desired location. Replace the trap about every 3 days.
