5 Laundry Mistakes That Are Making Your Clothes Shrink

There's nothing more frustrating than finding your favourite top two sizes smaller after a wash.

These are the most common mistakes you might be making when doing laundry that are causing your clothes to shrink:

Not reading the care label

Most of the time, clothes shrink simply because we didn't take the time to read the care label—they are there for a reason. Each fabric has specific needs in terms of water temperature, washing cycle, and drying. Before starting a wash, always check the tag and make sure to follow it.

Washing with hot water

Hot water is often thought to be more effective for cleaning clothes. However, it is unnecessary in most cases and can even be harmful. Natural fibres such as cotton, wool, and linen are particularly sensitive to heat. When exposed to water that is too hot, these fibres contract, causing the clothes to shrink. This can also happen with some synthetic fabrics, such as polyester.

Hot water also fades colours and weakens fibres, reducing the life of your clothes. Choose cold or lukewarm water for a gentler wash.

Using the wrong wash cycle

Choosing the right wash cycle is crucial to preserving your clothes. The delicate cycle is your ally for fabrics like silk, wool, or cashmere—and your undergarments. With gentler agitation and slower spin speeds, this program prevents fibres from stretching or breaking.

Your detergent

Conventional detergents are often formulated to remove stubborn stains, but they can also damage the fibres of your clothes. To extend their life, opt for eco-friendly or plant-based detergents, which are gentler on fabrics while still being effective.

Dry time and temperature

Heat, whether from water or a dryer, is your clothes' enemy. Tumble drying on high heat can cause irreversible shrinkage of fibres. Air dry or tumble dry on low heat to maintain the shape and texture of your favourite pieces.
