Cosy knits: Mitts
Mitts are knit on two needles and have a dot pattern on the back only. Recommended for experienced knitters. Instructions are written for Child's size. Any changes for Lady's and Man's sizes are written in brackets. If there is only one set of figures, it applies to all sizes. Standard abbreviations are used.

You need:

Briggs & Little Heritage 2-ply (100 g) yarn:
1 skein MC
Small amount of CC
One pair 4.00 mm needles OR whichever needles you require to produce the tension given below
Tension:
18 sts and 27 rows = 10 cm (4 ins) in St st. Work to the exact tension with the specified yarn to obtain satisfactory results.
TO SAVE TIME, TAKE TIME TO CHECK TENSION.
To make:
LEFT MITT
*With MC, cast on 28 (34,40) sts. Work 8 cm (3-1/4 ins) in [k1,p1] ribbing. Beg with a k row, work 2 rows in St st.*
To make thumb gusset and begin dot pattern:
Row 1: K9(12,15), p1, [inc 1 st in next st] twice, kl, p1, work Row 1 of Dot Pattern Graph (beg at right side of graph).
Row 2: Work next row of graph, k1, p5, k1, p to end of row.
Row 3: K9(12,15), p1, k5, p1, work next row of graph.
Row 4: Rep Row 2.
Row 5: K9(12,15), p1, inc 1 st in next st, k to within 2 sts of next p st, inc 1 st in next st, k1, p1, work next row of graph.
Continue in this manner, following dot pattern as established, inc every fourth row until there are 9(11,13)sts between the 2 purled sts, ending with a p row.
To make thumb:
K20(25,30), turn.
Next row: Cast on 1 st, p cast-on st and next 11(13,15) sts, turn.
Next row: Cast on 1 st, k cast-on st and next 12(14,16) sts. Beg with a p row, work these 13(15,17)sts in St st until thumb from cast-on sts measures 4(5,6) cm/1-1/2 (2, 2-1/4) ins, ending with a p row.
Next row: K1, [k2 tog] across, row.
Break yarn. Thread end through rem 7(8,9) sts. Draw up and fasten securely. Sew thumb seam.
To make remainder of mitt:
With right side facing, join yarn to last st on right-hand needle. Pick up and k5 sts at base of thumb. K across sts on left-hand needle, continuing dot pattern as before. 28(34,40) sts now on needle. Keeping continuity of pattern, work even in St st until work from base of thumb measures 9 cm/3-1/2 ins, ending with a p row.
To shape top:
Keeping continuity of dot pattern, shape as follows:
Row 1: K1, sl 1, k1, psso, k8(11,14), k2tog, k2, sl 1, k1, psso, k8(11,14), k2tog, k1.
Row 2 and all alternate rows: Purl.
Row 3: K1, sl 1, k1, psso, k6(9,12), k2tog, k2, sl 1, k1, psso, k6 (9,12), k2tog, k1.
Rep Rows 2 and 3, having 2 less sts between dec until 8(10,8) sts on needle. Break yarn and fasten off as for thumb.
RIGHT MITT
Work as for left mitt from * to *.
To make thumb gusset and begin dot pattern:
Work Row 1 of Dot Pattern Graph (beg at left side of graph), p1, [inc 1 st in next st] twice, k1, p1, k to end of row.
Row 2: P9(12,15), k1, p5, k1, work next row of graph.
Continue in this manner, following dot pattern as established and inc every fourth row between 2 purled sts as for left mitt, until there are 9(11,13) sts between the 2 purled sts, ending with a p row.
To make thumb:
K25(30,35), turn.
Next row: Cast on 1 st, p cast-on st and next 11(13,15) sts. Turn.
Next row: Cast on 1 st, k cast-on st and next 12(14,16) sts. Turn.
Complete thumb and rem of mitt as for left mitt.
TO FINISH:
Weave in yarn ends on wrong side of work. Steam lightly through a damp cloth.
