Festive Friday #4: Crocheted Mug Cozy and Coaster
Hi friends, Today I've got another great last-minute gift for you to make. This is the sort of thing that you can whip up in an hour or so, using whatever you have on hand, and it will probably still manage to look like a matching set made by Someone With A Plan. (I love it when I manage to look like Someone With A Plan!)
In my head I've been calling this the Cocoa-and-Marshmallows Mug Cozy Set, but when Jamie (
pet blogger extraordinaire) saw it, he exclaimed, "You made a Mug
Snuggie!" Ahem. Call it what you will, but if you pair this set with a new mug and some
fancy tea or a package of
homemade hot chocolate mix, I'm sure you'll make someone very happy! And of course, feel free to mix up the colours. Here's what you'll need:
1. First things first, make a foundation chain. I made mine just a wee bit smaller than the circumference of the mug, thinking that it would probably stretch. (It did.)
2. Work two rows of double crochet in brown, then switch to cream for one row. (I did a fair bit of ripping out until I remembered that tutorial at The Purl Bee. Then things got much easier.)
3. Switch back to brown and work another two rows. Marvel at how it's getting dark already, even though it's only twenty past four.
4. Fasten off and sew in your ends. I used one of the longer ends to make a button loop – knotted on either side of the white stripe and doubled-back to reinforce. Easy. (Of course, if you're using a small button, you could probably just slip it between a row of stitches and forget about making a loop. It's up to you.) Sew on your button.
5. To make the coaster (aka "mug rug"), I just made a
granny square, using the same colour pattern (inner two circles were brown, then a circle of white, then two more brown circles). It's not the most original colour scheme, but I was making it at 3 a.m. (I couldn't sleep), so. I think that a round granny (granny circle?) would be awesome. Maybe something
like these?
Of course, the best part of making stuff in the wee sma' hours of the night is that you can fumble around in the dark and set up a little vignette for yourself to wake up to. Awwww. Good mornin' sunshine! If this project has you craving more crochet, I'm happy to hook you up with more project ideas:
