The Best Pet-Friendly Fabrics For Your Home
Between sliding across the floor while chasing a ball and clambering onto the couch, our pets certainly make themselves at home.
After all, it is their home too! As well-meaning as they are, it’s easy for little claws and teeth to leave a mark on our furniture.
When choosing furnishings, it’s best to find materials that can withstand the inevitable scratches and stains that come with owning a pet. Here’s how to make your home more durable for your furry friends.
Pet-friendly fabrics
In general, you’ll want to choose a long-lasting fabric—for your couch, love seats, and even dining chairs—that means something easy to clean and tough to mark up.
Pro tip: if you’re concerned about the appearance of fur on your furniture, pick a fabric that’s a similar shade to your pet’s fur. If you have multiple pets, grey is a safe choice.
Leather
Not only does it look luxurious, but leather can be a durable option for pet owners. Since it’s a smooth material without fabric weaves, it’s less likely to catch on your pet’s nails and rip. Leather is also easy to clean since it doesn’t hold onto fur in the same way that, say, tweed would.
Tight-weave fabric
If you’re opting for a more traditional fabric, focus on materials with tightly woven fibre or a cut pile like velvet. Less fibres means fewer claws ripping the fabric; plus, cats aren’t as likely to use your couch as a scratching post.
Other popular options are microfibre or synthetic fibres, which are more stain-resistant and typically easier to clean.
Slipcovers
You might want to consider covering your furniture in a slipcover if you're set on more delicate fabric. They’re easy to wash and can be removed when guests are coming over.
