How to decorate the inside of a fireplace
Designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander share tips on how to fill a neglected firebox.
Q: I never use my fireplace. Do you have any tips on how I can decorate the firebox? - Zachary S., Toronto
A: Whatever you choose to fill the firebox, consider changing it twice a year: One look for the summer season, and a different look for the cooler months. In the summer, try filling it with hearty flowering plants. We like to use houseplants of two different sizes, placing the taller plants in the back, and the shorter ones in front to conceal the pots at the rear. In the winter, consider filling the firebox with a variety of monochromatic pillar candles in different heights and thicknesses. You can choose to light them for a party or special occasion, or simply leave them unlit for visual presence.
