I'm so sad that summer is coming to an end. Aren't you? But it makes me happy to look back over the past couple of months and realize that I had a fabulous summer! I've visited dozens of memorable places on my travels for work and pleasure, and have met some fascinating people, including Terri and Larry Cameron. After visiting the Calgary Stampede with a friend, we decided to check out some attractions in Edmonton before leaving Alberta. When we were halfway between the two cities, we came upon  The Prairie Creek Inn, where we decided to have dinner and spend the night. Who wouldn't? This charming 4.5-star country inn boasts 10 spacious, beautifully decorated guest suites – and its very own gourmet restaurant called Heartstone. They're now successful innkeepers, and Terri and her daughter, who is an artist/illustrator, have skillfully decorated all 10 suites. I was inspired by our suites' Western-themed decor that didn't feel like a hotel but a home away from home. Like me, you might want to steal these looks for your own home or cottage. [caption id="attachment_303" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Brown Trout room A soft, outdoors-inspired colour scheme is so relaxing. Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]

You can re-create this soft, nature-inspired colour scheme found in the Brown Trout Suite (above) with Dulux Foliage 30GY 50/195, a soft green paint that will bring the greenery from the outdoor landscape inside. Dulux Artisan Brown RM 71YR 08/119 is a gorgeous brown that will look luscious accented with Dulux Hiking Trail 60YR 33/047, a soft grey-brown.

Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]   By day, the sitting area (above), with its soft leather chairs and antique wooden farm bench, is awash with natural light. By night, it's a cosy place to relax in front of the fireplace and television. Check out Jane Lockhart Interior Design (available at Sears and independent retailers across Canada) and Crate and Barrel for similar styles of chairs. [caption id="attachment_315" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Fireplace The fireplace with a slate surround is a welcome feature on chilly Alberta nights. Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]   Take a cue from Terri, who's not afraid to mix patterns (above). This technique works best when you use patterns in the same colour family and scale. I love how the feminine damask pattern of the lampshade complements the masculine checkered headboard fabric. Clever!  You can find a similar lamp at  Crate and Barrel. [caption id="attachment_308" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Ensuite The bedroom's colour scheme flows into the ensuite. Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]   Complete with a soaker tub, granite-topped vanity and large walk-in glass shower (which is opposite the vanity), the ensuite is designed for sheer luxury and relaxation. And I love the fishing basket! [caption id="attachment_309" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Home on the Range The Home on the Range suite gives Western style a modern update. Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]

The Home on the Range Suite is a fun look for the little cowgirl or cowboy in your life! You can find faux-hide fabrics and throws. A faux leather (vinyl) headboard helps define the Western look. (But I'd advise that you keep the lasso in the barn!)

Dining at The Prairie Creek Inn

[caption id="attachment_311" align="aligncenter" width="400"] Heartstone dining room Nearby, we found the entrance to the Heartstone Restaurant of The Prairie Creek Inn. Photo by Karen Kirk[/caption]   The inn's Heartstone Restaurant (above) is just steps from the suites. The chef's gourmet creations include lots of local and seasonal ingredients. I love the split-log construction of the inn's buildings, and their cedar shake and natural rock details.
