3 steps to creating a pretty potted planter
Beautiful planters instantly spruce up entranceways, balconies and patios. Here's how to create your own stunning arrangements.
1. Shop smart
Decide where the container will be situated (consider sun, shade, wind and moisture conditions) and choose contrasting flowering and foliage plants accordingly. Consider annuals and tropical plants, as well as perennials and even small evergreens. For guaranteed success, select a mix of seedlings and more mature plants.
2. Build from the ground up
Make sure there's a drainage hole in the bottom of the planter. Fill three-quarters of the container with potting soil, and pat down to remove any air pockets. Add the largest plants first,
to establish the arrangement's scale and height.
3. Fill it out
Working from the centre out, continue to fill with plants of contrasting flower colours and foliage shapes. Fill in the sides with trailing ivy and vines. Water well, and remember that container plants need regular feeding.
