Is An Afternoon Nap Good For You?
It's worth taking that quick 15!
Researchers from the University College London and the University of the Republic in Montevideo, Uruguay, have found that short naps may promote brain health and help combat brain atrophy (shrinking of the brain).
"We found a link between regular daytime naps and larger brain volume, which may suggest that taking regular naps provides protection against neurodegeneration," the scientists say.
The larger our brain volume, the better our cognitive abilities, such as attention and memory. According to researchers, the brain shrinks by 0.2% per year after the age of 35 and by 0.5% per year after the age of 60.
The brains of nap-takers are said to be 15 cm3 larger, which is equivalent to delaying aging by three to six years. And there's no need to spend the afternoon in bed: a 15-minute nap is enough!
If you need help waking up and starting the day right, try these five tricks. And here's how much you should be sleeping per day compared to sitting and standing.
