Your ultimate guide to understanding diabetes
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association, there are over 9 million Canadians living with diabetes or prediabetes. Diabetes is a chronic disease that is caused by the body's inability to produce insulin, or the body's resistance to insulin.
There are three main types of diabetes:
• Type 1, where the body creates little or no insulin.
• Type 2, where the body can create insulin, but is unable to use it.
• Gestational diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce insulin during pregnancy. Though usually a temporary condition, it increases the risk of the mother and child developing diabetes.
