Why you shouldn't second guess your gut health

Bowel health - it's something we all know about, but avoid discussing. It may seem like an awkward, taboo or abnormal subject, but our gut health is an important indicator of our overall health. So let's let the bathroom door swing wide open and talk about why we should be trusting our gut.

What many don't realize is that our gut is an intuitive organ that often gives us helpful hints about what's going on inside our bodies. For example, something as common as constipation can actually be an indicator of dehydration, physical inactivity or a lack of fibre in your diet, which in turn can affect your mood, energy and concentration. Constipation occurs when digested food moves too slowly through the digestive tract and results in irregular or difficult bowel movements.

So, what can we do about it? Many of us count our calories or set alarms for taking our necessary medicine. Let's get into the practice of managing our gut health as well!

Eat healthy

Often we're in such a hurry that we find it's easier to skip eating a proper meal, but this can wreak havoc on your gut. Try to avoid the skipping, and instead keep to your regular eating schedule. It's the key to maintaining regularity and keeping your energy up throughout the day.

When it comes to what you're eating, make sure that you're including choices with fibre, such as whole grains, dried fruits and fresh vegetables. Practicing meal prep for the week can really help you stay on track. Try preparing baggies of baby carrots or cucumber for a quick, healthy snack. Lastly, let's not forget the importance of water intake to stay hydrated and keep your bowel movements soft.

Keep active

Another important way to manage gut healthy and get your bowels moving is to make sure your body is moving too! If your gut is feeling strange, try to increase your level of activity, whether it's going on a short walk, doing stretches or taking a yoga class. Every bit counts and can help your body keep things moving.

Trust your gut

Finally, remember to listen to your gut and understand the signs that it gives your body, so you know how to respond accordingly. If you feel the urge to go - then go! The more you suppress it, the higher your chances of constipation. And, if you're feeling blocked up – don't second guess relief. Laxatives such as Dulcolax® are available to provide dependable, effective, overnight relief of occasional constipation to help you get back to your regular self.

Bowel movements and gut health don't have to be awkward conversation. If you're not sure what your gut is telling you, always speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
