What You Need To Know About Your Glass Of Wine

Have you ever wondered about the caloric intake of your glass of wine? Is it even important?

This is why there's no nutrition label on wine bottles

In Canada, beverages with an alcohol content exceeding 0.5% are exempt from displaying nutritional facts. Instead, the government focuses on warning about alcohol consumption and its associated risks.

The display of nutritional values is currently under debate. Consumers are demanding greater transparency in the labelling of alcoholic beverages in order for people to make more informed choices.

How many calories are in a bottle of wine?

Since the information is not displayed on the bottle, it's difficult to give an accurate number regarding calories. However, there are a few factors that can help you choose a bottle based on your needs and wants.

1. Alcohol Content

The alcohol in wine is its main source of calories—it contains seven calories per gram. The more alcoholic a wine is, the more calories it contains.

2. Residual Sugar

During wine fermentation, some of the sugar from the grapes is converted into alcohol. However, there's residual sugar in every bottle. The drier the wine, the lower the residual sugar.

For example:

  • A dry red wine generally contains 1-3 grams of sugar per litre
  • A semi-dry white wine generally contains 4-12 grams of sugar per litre
  • a sweet wine generally contains more than 45 grams of sugar per litre

If the sugar content is not indicated on the bottle, you can look up detailed product information on the LCBO website.

3. The size of your wine pour

The size of your pour should be able 150 ml or 5 oz. The fuller the glass, the more calories you get. In 5 ounces, you will find approximately:

  • 120-150 calories in a glass of red wine
  • 120-175 calories in a glass of white wine
  • 105-140 calories in a glass of sparkling
